The Skye Terrier

The Skye terrier breed is one of the older breeds in the terrier category that originated in the Isle of Skye in Scotland. They became particularly popular thanks to Greyfriars Bobby.

This dog breed is very close to the ground and its shoulder only is about 10 inches. Additionally, they usually weigh no more than 25 to 35 pounds. One of their distinguishing features is their crooked front feet which makes it each for them to dig holes. Furthermore, they have long, straight, thick coats that come in a variety of different colors. Not to mention the fact that they have erect ears that make them stand out as well. Additionally, the Skye breed is a very unique breed and they cannot be handled as you would handle any other dog breed.

If you are looking for a pet that is loyal and is 100% devoted to their family, however, the Skye breed is the perfect breed for you to consider. They do not tend to be very warm to strangers at first however under the anti-dog legislation you are going to be expected to make sure that you make sure that your dog socializes. This is why it is a good idea that you and your pet tend a handling and a obedience training class so they can be more open to strangers. Not to mention the fact that it does not hurt to introduce them to new people frequently as well.

However, when people come over to your home you will want to make sure that you do not allow your dog to avoid them by leaving the room yet at the same time you do not want to force them to have to be held by people that they do not know if this is not something that they want to do. But, you do want your Skye to know that if you say someone is an okay person that this is something that they can trust. If your Skye is properly socialized you will find that they will be a loving companion and they may even turn out to be your “social butterfly”.

The Skye breed is known for being very smart as well. However, it is very important that they learn their boundaries while they are puppies. It can be very hard to teach a two year old that they are not allowed to be on the sofa and other furniture when they have been allowed to do so for all of their lives. So, to have the best pet that you could possibly imagine you should make sure that they know the rules from the first day. However, even though this is going to require you to be firm you also will want to make sure that you are gentle with them at the same time. Additionally, you should never hit your Skye as a form of punishment because this will only cause them to act out more. Instead a better approach is to change the tone in your voice and use words such as, “stop” “no”, or “bad” to make sure they get the message.

The Skye breed is also one of the dog breeds that are affected by dwarfism. This explains why they have a full size head and body but have short, stubby legs. Additionally, this can cause puppies to develop limbs that may last for seven months. Furthermore, you should never let your puppy do any jumping or intense running until they have at least reached a year old. Not to mention the fact that stress to their joints can even be caused by long walks. So, basically, you want to make sure you keep everything moderate for the first year of their life.

Leash training is something that is best done at a young age as well. You should always make sure that your puppy has their collar on and additionally by seven or eight weeks they should be ready to wear a leash as well. Nylon collars are recommended and you should never ever use a choke chain or collar. Furthermore, when first introducing them to this change you should allow them to adjust to just the collar at first before you attempt to put them on the leash. Not to mention the fact that you should never be dragging or pulling your puppy. Alternatively, it is suggested that you encourage them to follow you by calling them. Make sure they are rewarding when they do so this is why you should make sure you have treats on hand. Additionally, training sessions should be short so they can remain fun which will lead to your puppy becoming used to walking on the leash in no time.

Overall, make sure that you always treat your puppy with love and respect so you can have a lifetime devoted companion as well as a best friend.
